The Elsa Neumann Scholarship supports doctoral students from the four universities in Berlin. Scholarships are awarded as full-time funding for up to 36 months for preparing a doctoral thesis or as completion scholarships for advanced doctoral research projects, with a duration of up to 12 months.

• Requires excellent academic records, typically demonstrated by outstanding final grades from previous university degrees.

Completion scholarships for a maximum of 12 months are also available.

• Part-time scholarships are offered for those with family or health-related responsibilities.

• Applicants must be enrolled in a doctoral program at one of Berlin’s universities.

• High academic performance and a well-defined doctoral research project are essential.

• No previous public funding for the doctoral project.

• Open to all doctoral fields and disciplines.

Application Procedure:

1. Online Application: Complete and submit the online form.

2. Document Upload: Print, sign, and scan the form. Save it as a PDF.

3. DRS Registration: Register via the DRS platform and include your personal information along with your doctoral supervisor’s contact details.

4. Submission: After sending a request for a recommendation letter from your supervisor, upload your completed application (signed form, CV, diplomas, doctoral admission notice, research project, and timeline) as a PDF and submit.

Selection Process:

Applications are reviewed by the Inter-University Commission for Doctoral Scholarships. The final decision is made by the commission, whose members are appointed by the Senator for Higher Education in Berlin.

Important Deadlines:

• There are two deadlines each year: one in April and another in November.

• Exact deadlines are announced by the office closer to the submission dates.

• Funding typically begins in April or October each year.
